The two main reasons we go to a therapist are stress and pain relief. Both are results or symptoms of a bigger problem within our being.
PAIN
-----
Pain is more often considered to be linked to a physical problem. However, I have seen and treated many cases where it resulted from or linked to a mental condition, which taught me to always treat pain in a holistic manner (the physical and the mental). Pain is a sensory and emotional experience signalling that something might be wrong in the body. It is a complex phenomenon with both physical and psychological components, serving as a protective mechanism to alert us to potential or actual injury.
We distinguish two types of pain;
· Acute Pain: Short-term, typically linked to injury or illness, subsides as healing occurs.
· Chronic Pain: Long-lasting, persists beyond normal healing time, and can become a condition in itself.
And four categories;
· Nociceptive Pain: Caused by damage to body tissues (e.g., cuts, burns, or broken bones).
· Neuropathic Pain: Caused by damage or dysfunction in the nervous system (e.g., sciatica, diabetic neuropathy).
· Psychogenic Pain: Linked to psychological factors, such as stress or anxiety.
· Idiopathic Pain: Pain without a clear or identifiable cause.
Functions of Pain
· Protective: Encourages rest and avoidance of harmful activities.
· Diagnostic: Helps identify underlying health conditions.
Pain is processed in the brain, starting with sensory signals transmitted from affected areas. These signals are interpreted based on individual thresholds, past experiences, and emotional states, which means pain is very specific and personal.
PAIN TREATMENTS
-------———————-
Acupressure & Deep-tissue massage
Deep tissue massage is intense and therapeutic, alleviating pain and restoring function // Acupressure massage uses finger pressure on specific points, relieving pain, reducing stress, and enhancing blood- and energy flow // back (sciatic), shoulders, neck, hip, knee (pain relief & relaxation)
Craniosacral therapy
Relieve stress and tension, alleviate pain, enhance physical function, improve mental clarity and emotional well-being // therapist uses gentle touch to assess and enhance the movement of cerebrospinal fluid
STRESS
--------
Stress: Although everyone experiences stress as very annoying, stress is nevertheless a life-saver. That sounds strange because so many people suffer from stress. We make a distinction between natural stress and suffering from stress. First, we will look at what natural stress is. In the brain, there is the stress mechanism to defend ourselves against outside dangers, that is, dangers from our immediate environment. For example, if you are crossing the road and you notice a car coming around the corner, you are in a stressful situation. You take a step back, make yourself small and hold your breath. Once the car has passed, you relax the muscles, take another deep breath and feel relaxed again. If you don't react, the car will run you over, hence stress saves your life. We not only have a stress mechanism but also a relaxation mechanism. With every threat, the stress mechanism immediately engages. Once the danger has passed, deep relaxation sets in, making both mechanisms work as antagonists. Natural stress is not at all dangerous or unhealthy; it is part of our defense mechanisms. When we speak of stress, we almost always mean suffering from stress.
When we stay locked in a stressful state for a long period, it becomes unnatural stress and has a very negative impact on our being. Stress weakens immunity, making one easily susceptible to a variety of diseases. Stress causes increased irritability, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, depression, burnout, etc. Stress causes many diseases and inhibits the healing process. Children under persistent stress quickly exhibit learning difficulties or behavioural disorders. It is not easy to eliminate stressors because they are beyond us. You cannot stop traffic or avoid crowds. It is important to become stress-resistant.
STRESS TREATMENTS
—————————-------
Qigong (physical stress)
Exercise and breathing to enhance your flexibility, balance and strength. The exercises have a vitalising and healing effect on body and mind
Biorelaxation
Biorelaxation is a natural method that restores disturbed stress and relaxation mechanisms. Based on your typology, we determine your ideal coaching and nutrition before moving on to the practice or practice of all these relaxation and sleep-restoring techniques. The great value of this method lies in the fact that the effect is permanent. It can never be excluded that due to negative circumstances, both mechanisms become disturbed. It is then sufficient to return to the exercises and spontaneously restore the disturbed balance. // This is a long-term program tailor-made for the patient in terms of length and content. // Please ask me for an offer
